PC Build Help

Go to solution Solved by likwidsolutions,

Sorry for the late response. I'm rather new to the LTT forums (any like's would be appreciate ;) ). Anyways, I was able to get my i5-460k up to 4.3 GHz (base speed 3.5 and Turbo is 3.9), with all cores synced at 4300. Now the UEFI for Asus seems to expect me to use a i7 4790k because it gives me the option to  go 4.2, 4.4, or 4.6 GhZ, but maybe that is specific to my CPU idk, either way, I have been using Intel's free "Intel Extreme Tuning Software to make my adjustments. Sure it isn't done in the BIOS/UEFI, but you can create profiles, boot your PC to stock specs then slowly run it up to your saved profile. The features are just as extensive IMO, excpt when it comes to Memory or your GPU (As far as I know), but for CPU OCing, I am loving it. I am not the most experienced overclocker and I have seen benchmarks of people getting well above that (4.9, possibly even above 5GHz, I don't really remember >.>, so if you want to save at least $100 and still be able to do content creation, the 4690k should work for you. Look at it this way, buy it from Amazon and try it out, if you feel like you need more speed and available CPU power, you can always use their very forgiving 30day return policy (whereas many places limit the amount of time or don't allow you to return CPUs once opened at all.

I actually had to do this with a few parts of my build because this was my first Enthusiast build, any build I made before this was just standard pieces so I didon

Currently looking at building my first PC, it'll primary be used for gaming (CS:GO, GTA V, Planetside 2, Far Cry 4, etc.). I'm currently located in Canada, so prices with be in $CAD.

This is the build I've currently put together, it looks like it'll cost me $2158.91 CAD.

I'm looking to drop this price to around $1500 CAD and I was wondering if anyone here could help me out. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Forgot to say that I'll also be using this build for editing.

You could also go with an i5-4690k, you will barely see any benefit in gaming applications. An i5-4690k works great, still Overclockable, and knocks a good portion off of that pricetag.

I swapped out the WD Black 2tb for a USB 3.0 Seagate Backup Plus Slim. You might think I'm crazy but just hold on. I used one of these to replace my 1TB SSHD in my PS4 because it is still the same model that Seagate sells as internal storage but about 30 or 40 bucks cheaper. Obviously you wouldn't get the performance of a WD Black, but it also saves you a good amount because you can life up the casing very easily and take off a small SATA to USB 3.0 Adapter and have yourself a SATA III 2TB 2.5" HDD which you can double up with the SSD in 1 HDD bay. I already gave my reasoning for the CPU. That's just some thoughts on top of my head. I bet there are other ways to get by without too much compromise.

Also you have a SATA to USB connector and casing to make yourself an external USB 3.0 drive when you need one. it's a nice little bonus.

Unless you go insane with overclocking, and I am mean like crazy, you could get 750 watt PSU instead and be fine. Also unless you plan on doing content creation, i.e. video editing/photoshop you will be fine with i5 4690k.

An unlocked i5 is enough for gaming today and the foreseable future and 8GB ram also but if you want you can add the same ram kit down the road.

I was also going to suggest a different PSU. I went with a RM 750 (which was more than enough, and I had a similar if not slightly more powerful build, except the GPU, but honestly not enough to make much of a difference), but I got lucky and Amazon accidentally sent me an AX760i, I didn't complain :)

But yeah, I'd look for something in the 500-600W range, you could also choose Memory that is less "Performance Orientated" but still have small hetsinks, can't think of a specific one off my head, but I think there was a video where Linus shows that most memory does fine without the crazy heatsinks on memory, especially if it's being run at lower levels like 1600. Maybe if it were 2400-3000MHz, but you should be able to downsize and save maybe 30 or 40 bucks there (keep in mind I am in the US and not really thinking about the conversion rate so keep that in mind).

I do play on doing content creation, how much of a difference would the i5-4690k give me to an i7-4790k would you say?
