So I've been using Elementary OS Freya for about a week but for some reason it won't boot anymore so i'm looking for a new Linux Distro for my laptop.

 

Specs: 

- AMD A6 4400M

- 8GB RAM

- 1TB HDD

- Will put an 120Gb SSD in when I find the distro that suits me best.

 

I'm an IT student so the distro needs to be able to handle some multitasking.

Atm I'm looking at OpenSuse and Ubuntu Mate, maybe Elementary os Luna

 

Which distro do you guys recommend?

I use Mint Cinammon on my laptop, I like the UI and hadn't have any problems so far.

I have been using ubuntu 14.10 with Gnome desktop and numix skins. Its pretty good.

 

How's the boot time? I used Ubuntu before but it was pretty slow in logging in and initializing the environment (might improve with ssd)

With a single SSD the boot is pretty fast. Around 8 seconds. But I use a RAID 0 setup for my OS and additional RAID 1 setup so it takes forever to boot. (Around 1 min 30 secs)

Boot time is around 10 seconds from a SSD. And initialisation time greatly depends on how you tweak and finetune your settings, also you can use the desktop already while it still initialises some less important services.

Xubuntu 15.04.  Lightweight, nice looking, great support.  Ubuntu with GNOME might be too heavy for your system, and I just don't like Linux Mint.

I'm a huge fan of Linux Mint with Cinnamon. Stuff tends to "just work" right out of the box.

 

Fedora's a pretty nice distro as well.

Linux Mint all the way. Most popular linux distro for years (distrowatch.com), and I couldn't recommend it enough!
