Hello all,

I'm here as I need suggestions on parts to build a gaming rig. My experience is limited to upgrading a few parts  (CPU, GPU, and PSU) of my current HP that I frankensteined into and bigger case (better airflow). It has served me very well, however, with the announcement of Fallout 4, I don't think it will be able to run it. Even if I managed to find the best parts that are compatible with it. So it's time to build a new one.

Budget: $750-$850 Preferred/ $1000 Maximum

Location: USA

Purely for gaming and web browsing. At a desk, not a HTPC.

The monitor will need replaced as my current one only has one DVI and one VGA port. (My current monitor.)

I have a mouse and keyboard that i'm fine with using. I'm going to need an OS though, as my current machine uses Vista.   >.>

Thanks!

Hello to you as well.
I have a list of parts that I'm considering for my first build that may fit your budget (not including monitor).
Please keep in mind that this is based off of internet research NOT experience. I am a scrub and have no idea what I am doing.

Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor  $189.95

-ASRock Z97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard $89.99

-G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory $54.99

- (2x) Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive $48.75 (each)

-MSI GeForce GTX 960 4GB Video Card $239.99

-Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case $64.99

-Corsair CSM 450W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply $59.99

-Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer $16.99

-Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 OEM (64-bit) $95.75

-Asus Xonar DG 24-bit 96 KHz Sound Card $25.99

-Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I 802.11a/b/g/n/ac PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter -$28.98

-Cooler Master SickleFlow 69.7 CFM 120mm Fan -$5.99

The grand total is $971 but pcpartpicker claims that rebates will knock around 70 dollars off that.
I hope this list is in some way helpful and wish you the best of luck on your endeavors.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/BXWjkLheres a bit of a better build

I don't know if you noticed, but that case has no USB 3.0 ports. Does that matter since the motherboard has 3.0?

Since I've never built a computer from the ground up before, and lately, how would I go about installing the OS without a optical drive? Will I be able to download a copy of the OS from Microsoft, or can I copy from the disk to a thumb drive?

*Edit* Also is there a Nvidia equivalent of that card? I just prefer that brand is all.

there are you tube tutorials on how it all works.

do NOT get a sound card. its just a stupid gimic. the one on the mobo works just fine

i recommend getting a single 1tb hard drive and instead puting that extra money into an i5 4690k and an r9 290.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GET AN r9 290 tri x its so much better

otherwise its good, but didnt you mention you needed a monitor?

Wasn't planning on getting a sound card. I'm not an audiophile anyway, on board audio will do.

Don't know why he suggested a second 1TB drive, seems excessive. This computer only has a 300 gig drive and I still have 33 gigs of space left.

Would it be fine to get the locked version of the i5 4960? I know it's only a few bucks difference, but it seems wasteful to spend and extra when I'm not going to overclock.

What's the difference between the R9 290 Tri X and GTX 960? Doing a quick comparison, the only big difference I see is 290 has a 512 memory interface while the GTX has only 128. I'm assuming that's a lot better?

Yeah, I need a monitor. That's sort of easy to solve with his suggestion because he added the sound card, wifi, and extra hardrive. Which adds up to $120.71.

The issue I see with the monitor you suggested is it only has DVI and VGA and it's out of stock or discontinued. Are there any monitors close to that price that have HDMI at least?

Thanks for your help! I'm probably going with what Mohenjo said. Seems like I would get better performance for a about the same price. Very good suggestion though.
