You can configure your resolution, framerate, bitrate, aspect ratio, and such as well, which I highly recommend you do.

I want to render something on Sony Vegas that is going to be burned to a DVD that needs to be played in a DVD player.

What file type should it be rendered in? and how can I burn it?

System: Thinkpad T460

.mp4 is going to give you the best filesize, and most DVD burning softwares handle .mp4 just fine. In Sony Vegas, it would be the "MainConcept AVC/AAC." Just configure its template to fit your needs. (Resolution, framerate, etc.)

Assuming you're going to burn it to DVD and play it on a set-top DVD player, I would recommend rendering it as an MPEG2 (Choose NTSC or PAL as appropriate).

DVD software players might be able to handle .MP4 fine, but many set-top DVD players cannot handle that format. Only the OP can tell us if his DVD player can playback .MP4 or not though.

Without that information, I can't give a clear answer. I just know that sending it to the disc works fine with .mp4.

Sure, but you can burn anything to a DVD. I could burn a text file filled with ASCII porn, for all that it matters.

But that doesn't mean the end-player will handle it.

With that in mind, you're perfectly correct: The OP needs to clarify his question with additional information. MPEG2 however, is the video codec that DVD movies are encoded in, so that's always a safe bet.

MP4, however, is a far superior and more efficient format, so if the player does support it, then it's recommended, so I'll agree with you assuming the player can play it.

.mp4 can't be used...

I rendered it in .mpg but it has no sound....

.mpeg2 is not an option in Vegas

This might be a silly question, but did you make sure that the audio track shows up as a distinct layer in the Sony Vegas timeline work space?

Appreciate the effort you put into that.

I missed the audio option when I was editing the template.... Derp

Ha. hardly. Ctrl + Alt + Print Screen takes a screengrab of your currently-focused window. Then I just pasted them into GIMP and saved them. No big deal, and I'm glad I could help!

(Been working with Vegas for about 9 years now, so I know a thing or two. ^.~)

  1. Ctrl+Alt+PrintScr
  2. Ctrl+V into image program
  3. Export image as PNG
  4. Repeat 1-3 for all images
  5. Select all images and drag+drop them onto imgur.com
  6. Hit upload
  7. Embed each image in order in post
  8. Done!
