I have been trying to figure this out for a while now... I want a monitor that's 2560p wide but I can't decide how tall I want it. I found used (which I'm good with) a 2560x1080 29" IPS monitor for $250 and a 2560x1440 27" IPS for $270. Anyone have a suggestion for me? I went to micro center yesterday to see what they looked like in person and I liked both of them! I play league of legends mostly which benefits from ultrawide a little bit and doesn't get anything from a 1440p over 1080p at 16:9. Cheaper suggestions would be nice if you know of alternatives.

On a unrelated note, when I was at microcenter yesterday it was funny because I knew as much or more than the people working there it seemed and someone was suggesting getting a 6300 haha. Why don't you just get a first generation i5 lol.

Bought LG 29UB55, 29 inch 2560x1080 IPS display. Arrived today, love it. Way better than my old 23" Samsung, which I will be using as TV in the future.

with a 750ti I wouldn't go higher than 1080p

I have both and for cinema movies I prefer the 21:9 but for fps 16:9 is the way to go.

I can run with 2x dsr in any game I play so gpu power isn't an issue. I'll upgrade if I need to also. I don't watch movies much, just tv shows.

FPS as in first person shooters or frames per second? Either way it doesn't really matter because I just pay league which isn't an FPS game and I get plenty of FPS.

Is the lack of height of an ultrawide much of an issue for web browsing? I'm planning on a 2560 horizontal resolution to take the place of dual monitors to have less on my desk so I'll probably have 2 chrome windows side by side most of the time. I know it's just like a 1080p monitor but does it make it feel cramped?

I meant first person shooter, maybe you can give me the name of each monitor so I can fully make my recommendation.

I didn't have the models before but I got them now.

Reasons to go with the 16:9

Much higher DPI, so less jaggies at the same AA level as the 21:9

A lot more pixels (great for productivity)

Taller than the 21:9 screen

Reasons for the 21:9

better performance in games at the native resolution

Physically wider, however the same resolution in width

Maybe you prefer the aspect ratio

less/no black bars when watching films that are a wide aspect ratio

reasons against the 16:9

at the same settings in games, you'll get lower performance at the native resolution

reasons against the 21:9

less pixels so less productivity

when consuming 16:9 or similar content you're effectively watching on a screen smaller than 25"

If you can get a 27" like your OP says then that's almost always going to be the better solution. You can even play games at 2560x1080 on it if you really want, but you're loosing a lot of screen space.

Personally i can't really stand anything lower than 2560x1440 at 27" anymore, but if i do use a lower resolution screen, then i'd want it on a smaller screen, otherwise everything is horribly magnified.

Hence, i wouldn't mind working on a 3440x1440 21:9 34" monitor since it's just the 27" with extra monitor on the sides.

But then again, why would i go for that, when there's a 38" 4k screen available... And then how long is it going to be before there's a 21:9 equivilent of that...
