Headphones jack issue

Go to solution Solved by dankarlo,

Option 1 : The jack has been broken off the board but is held in place enough to make some contact.

Test : Moving the jack about in a stirring motion to put pressure on the jack connectors. If the audio changes the jack is physically damaged.

Resolution : Open her up and solder on a new audio jack.

Option 2 : The audio drives are playing silly buggers.

Resolution : Completely remove the audio drivers and install the latest version.

Option 3 : The on board audio chip is dying.

Resolution : Use a USB external audio jack. Nice and cheap from most auction sites.

Thanks k4p84. It was the audio drived. I did a reinstall and now works fine. Hope it stays that way in the future :)

Hi guys,

i have a laptop at work (HP 450) and sometimes when i plug in my headphones the noise comming from them is somewhat vague.

For example, when playing music or some video in Youtube there is no bass and it sounds quieter.

I am pretty sure it is comming from the audio jack, and not from the headphones because when they are plugged at my home PC or mu phone, the noise is normal.

Someone had this issue? Perhaps the jack is faulty/dirty. And again, it happens 1-2 days of the week.

I know you said it works fine with your PC, but if you can, take another pair of headphones to work with you, and just see if it's headphones. I had (Mum was armed with a vacuum cleaner and sucked them up) and they worked fine with my PC but not my phone, but another pair worked fine with my phone and PC.

is the noise more a static noise? also if you alter your screen brightness or workload does it change?

in that case it can be coil whine, nothing much you can do about that... i had it with my previous notebook and i solved it with an external sound card

No static noise. Just the lack of bass and a bit quieter.

I will try to clean it up and try with another set of headphones.

Just tesed it with another set (I have 2 other on my desk) of headphones with closed cups. The result is the same, so it is definately comming from the jack.

Proceeding with cleaning the sh** out of it and let's see :)

EDIT: Clieaning didn't help, so I guess it is a hardware issue. If i restart the laptop it is okay and it happens once in a while. It does not happen after 2-3 hours, but from the moment the laprop boots in Windows.
