I would push the budget a little higher and try getting a D3200/D5100 or 100D/600D. 500D is fairly old...

What would you choose the D3200 or D5100 and why?

It depends. If you are buying used I would get D5100, but for the price of used D5100 you can almost squeeze in a new D3200, then I would get that. D3200 has newer sensor, D5100 has flippy screen.

I would definitely recommend a low end Nikon. The newer ones offer very stellar performance and features for their price range... Honestly.

If you do a lot of video grab the D5100... Its sensor is not quite as good as the 3200 but the flip-out screen and 1080p 30fps is pretty good for its price. Plus on older models... the d3200 included you can use custom firmware (at your own risk), but I use it and have had no issues to basically remove video time limitations, add more manual control for video, and lower the amount of compression allowing an overall better value.

But honestly if your mostly only going for pictures the D3200 is a superb choice for a beginner... of course the D3300 is slightly newer but these two basically have the same 24mp sensor... the d3300 just has a few improvements to it.

Bobafett239 I agree! The D3200 is a awesome entry into DSLR.. just slap on a 50mm plastic fantastic on it and shoot !
