Two questions about Fallout.

Vozella
Go to solution Solved by RollinLower,

fallout 3 and fallout: new vegas are basically two seperate stories with two seperate protagonists.

i reccomend playing fallout 3 before playing fallout new vegas tough! they add a lot more in terms of game mechanics at fallout new vegas.

Do I have to play the previous Fallout games to understand what happenes in Fallout 3 or New Vegas?

(I was gonna ask this for Fallout 4, but we wouldn't know because it's not out yet.)

Also, Should I play Fallout 3 or New Vegas first?

I wouldn't think so. I've played Fallout 3 and New Vegas and I feel like you could play New Vegas and not Fallout 3 and understand what's going on, or vice versa (if that even works).

EDIT: I don't think there's enough information out yet about what Fallout 4 is going to be directed around exactly. Plus it's going to be in an entirely different area.

Fallout 3 first, then New Vegas. The first two were a lot different. The story is not continuous, you're a different character each time so you could jump in anywhere

Non of the games in the Fallout series directly follows the previous one.

The only exception being the two first games, but you could easily follow the second one without playing the first one.

But there are refrences and easter eggs that points to earlier games.

I would recommend you to play Fallout 3 first, since that is the most action oriented of the two.

But both are great games.

No you do not. Fallout 3 and New Vegas were developed by Bethesda Softworks whereas all the previous ones were by a different developer (Cannot remember name off the top of my head). Fallout 4 will not continue in any kind of story from Fallout 3 other than the occasional reference, character or Easter egg. You should play Fallout 3 because it's one of the best games ever IMO.

They don't really have anything that connects the games in that way.

The world is obviously the same so they share the same lore but I think the references to previous games are pretty minimal.

And ingame years wise New Vegas is a prequel I think.

I haven't personally used it but there is a mod to play 3 in New Vegas' engine.

If it's recommended to play 3 before New Vegas, does that mean it's recommended to play 1 instead of 3?

nope. fallout 1&2 are both very different games from fallout 3.

you can understand the story and everything perfectly fine if you just skip the first two games!

sometimes you just won't get a joke or refference to the earlier titles, but those happen very, very rarely. :P

He said play them in that order because 3 is simpler in terms of mechanics. Jumping to 1 would be a switch in the style of gameplay entirely.

Each is a standalone, but the whole story of Fallout the games weave is really cool.  It's worth it to read the summary of what happened in previous games to get a feel for the world.

Alright then. I'll play the first two games after I finished the latest games. Thanks.
