I currently have a Intel G3258 and a MSI mATX bored in my home server that is running FreeNAS (with Plex and Syncthing). I'm going to give the bored and processor to a family member when I upgrade my gaming rigs GPU (currently a 7970) so they have a descent little gaming rig themselves. So I was looking for some second opinions before I took the dive.

What I was looking at was the AsRock C2750D4I that Linus had a video over not too long ago. I know that an octa-core processor would be overkill for what i'm doing but it's quad-core little brother is only a $100 less which in my mind is almost worth the extra money for the octa. If anyone has another bored/processor (does not have to be a combo) they would suggest it would be appreciated. As far as budget as long as it stays under $500 i'd be happy. Thank you all in advance!

What exactly do you need from a server board? Theoretically you could grab yourself a full-blown Xeon (albeit quad/hexa-core with HT) and a decent board of your choice.

I really don't need anything too crazy. I doubt i'd ever have more than 8 hard drives plugged in. FreeeNas is not that intensive and i'm mainly using it as a media server so nothing crazy. Maybe IF/when 10Gb get's a little but better as far as pricing I would consider throwing a 10Gb NIC in there. So mainly something that is efficient but still qualified to get the job done.

An i5 maybe? You'll get a decent integrated graphics (from my knowledge Iris has no problems playing 4K videos) and plenty of headroom.
