My original ssd in my build is failing and I see in alot of YouTube videos including some by Linus having two ssds in raid 0. Is there really a benefit or is it kinda placebo? I currently have an ssd running my OS and a few programs and my games on a wd caviar black.

RAID 0 is for speed with no data redundancy. SSD's are already fast enough so no benefit there. Note: I got burned once by RAID 0 using two HDD. One of my drives failed and I 'almost' lost everything. I tried an emergency backup while the drive was failing and lucky I saved anything at all. Backup often.

RAID 1 gives data redundancy on two identical mirrored drives. Not sure if the SSD finite write limit would be an issue. :)

"RAID 0 (also known as a stripe set or striped volume) splits ("stripes") data evenly across two or more disks, without parity information, redundancy, or fault tolerance. Since RAID 0 provides no fault tolerance or redundancy, the failure of one drive will cause the entire array to fail; as a result of having data striped across all disks, the failure will result in total data loss. This configuration is typically implemented having speed as the intended goal. RAID 0 is normally used to increase performance. A RAID 0 setup can be created with disks of differing sizes, but the storage space added to the array by each disk is limited to the size of the smallest disk."

"RAID 1 consists of an exact copy (or mirror) of a set of data on two or more disks; a classic RAID 1 mirrored pair contains two disks. This configuration offers no parity, striping, or spanning of disk space across multiple disks, since the data is mirrored on all disks belonging to the array, and the array can only be as big as the smallest member disk. This layout is useful when read performance or reliability is more important than write performance or the resulting data storage capacity. The array will continue to operate so long as at least one member drive is operational. Performance - Any read request can be serviced and handled by any drive in the array; thus, depending on the nature of I/O load, random read performance of a RAID 1 array may equal up to the sum of each member's performance, while the write performance remains at the level of a single disk. However, if disks with different speeds are used in a RAID 1 array, overall write performance is equal to the speed of the slowest disk."

Not worth it unless you have the cash to splash

I do have it and I'm adept enough to constantly backup. So I should just get a 500gb ssd instead of raiding two 256's?

If you are going to have it all backed up and you have space in your PC and money to spare RAID 0 SSDs makes sense if you are after THE best performance

As long as you understand the risks, that you are taking up 2 sata ports, etc etc then fair enough

In my planned build I'm still debating the merit of a single 500gb SSD or a 250mb SSD and 1TB HDD combo. The later configuration is more economical.

I was happy with my setup like that. My ssd is starting to go and since I had some extra cash to play with I was just considering raiding two. But if you go that route you'll be pleased.

Hey RasAlGhul,

RAID0 with two SSD would give you even more speed boost, theoretically. A single SSD would already be very fast for loading/boot times for your OS and games. Setting two drives in RAID0 would practically almost decrease in half that loading time, but the change from 3 seconds to one and a half (for example) isn't that noticeable compared to jumping from a HDD to SSD or RAID0 with HDDs.
It really depends on what you are doing with the drive and what performance are you looking for. :)

My daily driver runs 2x 850 evo, in raid 0.. All my importaint stuff is in the cloud, so it is pretty much apps only i will lose in case of a ssd failure.. 1100mbps read and 900mbps write is quite nice :D

Right now Micro Center has a sale and I can get two 250's for just under $200.
