I recently tried installing a radeon 5450 into my girlfriend's computer, the monitor did not display anything. I left the card in and tried plugging the monitor into the onboard graphics, it still did not display anything. As long as the card is in the monitor will not display anything. The card works on other computers i have tried, what seems to be the problem?

The monitor works fine as long as the card isn't installed.

dead card? when did you last have it working?

Probably a couple months ago, I won't be able to test it on another computer for a few days though.

well test it then come back with reuslts, until then im just gonna assume its probs dead :( that card is rather old, what kind of games your gf play? you may be able to pick up a decent cheap gpu off of ebay or something if you can scrape up a few bucks, 270X's go for like $100 and 260X's like $75/80 (thats actually rlly good performance per dollar tbh, but like i said, only if she really needs it i guess)

Well I had this card from an old computer I upgraded and she said she wanted dual monitors so I decided to try this one, I don't have any money at the moment to buy a new graphics card. Is this card better than the integrated graphics of an intel 4440?

I also have a gts 8800 but her power supply doesn't have a 6-pin.

tbh you might be able to get away with the iGPU for a lil bit

Yeah I guess she may have to wait for dual monitors, that's the only reason she wants an upgrade. She's pretty happy with the iGPU performance, she only plays minecraft and some skyrim as of right now so it's not too urgent.

Then you are in no hurry and you can think clearly and no need to stress and mess it up. ;)

Yeah you're right xD

Hahaha lucky you.

Now, about the topic.

Check options in the BIOS, you may have to disable integrated GPU, and manually configure the "Display output", basically tell the BIOS to use the PCI-E card as video output.

Trust me, I had a 5450 that didn't showed up video, and I fixed it by doing that.

Do that if you want to check if the card is working, I don't know if the 5450 is more powerful than any Ivy-Haswell CPU. Maybe you're better just using the iGPU

If she's happy that's ok. But if you want to be the real MVP get her something like a cheap, reliable power supply (Corsair CX430) and a cheap but good GPU (R7 265, used 270 or any 7850-7870) I'm pretty sure that with any of those GPU the experience will be way better (considering that she's fine with the i5 iGPU)

i build a pc for a girlfriend too a little while ago.

with a i5 4460 and a r9 280 i believe.

after finishing the build she wanted to place the pc and display somewhere else in her room. she said it won't be a problem plunging a few cables back in.

6months later she called me cause she couldn't play sims properly.

found out she plugged the display into the mobo.

I checked her BIOS and everything seems to be right, so i'll just have to try again when I go back over to her house. I just put the card in my machine and it works perfectly fine so it has to be something wrong in the BIOS.

She just does a lot of art on her computer so she wants dual monitors to make it easier to switch music or look at something on another screen without having to minimize what she's doing, so the power of the card isn't really why I want to give her this GPU.

Seems like a dead card. Unfortunately. If you updated the BIOS and the monitor works with everything else. Hmmm. Save up some cash?

Sadly her power supply doesn't even have two molex. But i'll probably just get the 5450 working pretty soon.
