If it's new, why did he buy an old motherboard? That motherboard is a few years out of date and the CPUs haven't been made for it for a while now. It's also fairly low-quality so I wouldnt stick something like a K series CPU into it.

CPU/MoBo parts that are currently in production are actually usually cheaper and better performing than old stock that's 1-2 years old. The old stock is more expensive because there is a limited supply and still high demand (relative to supply) because people are locked in to it with their MoBos/CPUs that they already own. He could have saved money and gotten better stuff by actually getting new parts rather than old stock.

I think I can't argue with that

I check the MB web site and he still has a ton of options and frankly xeon e3 1275 or i7 3770 are kick ass cpus Is he going with a dedicated graphics card? Microcenter has xeon 1245 and 1275 for 220 and 240 and an I5 3570 for 170 or 135 open box. The guy could have chosen ALLOT worse like a MB with ddr2 support. All is not lost.

Whats the budget? What kind monitor? GPU? games he wants to play?
