Do I need more RAM?

Go to solution Solved by Analog,

I don't think I'll be getting DDR4 anytime soon, due to that my MOBO is pretty old so won't be able to support it and I have no where near enough to upgrade both my CPU and MOBO anytime soon.

I want to upgrade my PSU soon but I will be getting money for that specifically in a month or two, my new GPU will be a christmas present so I can't upgrade much else other than my RAM

In that case, since you do plan on using that platform for a couple of more years, go for it. I bet you will find good use of the other 8GB of RAM. :)

I use Photoshop often along with Chrome so these both take up a large amount of RAM, I often reach around 7.6GB being used out of 8 so will it be worthwhile upgrading to 12GB?

I use Corsair Vengeance so due to the current price drop I thought it might be a good time to get a bit extra.

I don't often max it out but I would like to be able to have as much open as I want to.

I've already taken up the 2nd and 4th slot (the first is covered by my heatsink) so will it be better to get a 8GB stick as I won't be able to get anymore afterwards.

What do you all think?

If you upgrade go to 16GB not 12GB but from what you said I don't think it is necessary though might be useful, maybe upgrade something else in your build and then ram later because ram is relatively cheap.

It wouldn't hurt, but if you do get more you might as well just go for another 8 to make it 16gb.

If you have the money to get an 8GB stick, by all means, go for it. However, as you said, you don't really max out your 8GB system memory now so imo the upgrade seems a bit pointless. Usually you don't need to upgrade something that is working fine, unless you really want to spend your cash. I would say, wait and get more RAM when you upgrade to DDR4.

Well you can save up to upgrade that CPU...What GPU are you getting?

Depends on what AMD do with the new GPU's, probably get a 380x or whichever is within my price range if they are worth it

380x is a rebrand of the 290x...the most I would recommend to get all your money is worth with that CPU is 960/280x (more 280x) because anything over it gets bottlenecked a good amount so you would waste money you saved up if you go any higher than that.

I was looking at the 960 but then was recommend the AMD option (280x) as it is more powerful but obviously the 960 is a lot more recent. Will the 370 be a rebrand of the 280 then?
