Hey folks, I could use some help

How important is the max FFTs (maximum heat) test on Prime95? Cos even at a low OC my temps go up hard to 95+ (I have Corsair Link autoshutdown the PC if CPU temps goes past 95). Every other test (Blend in Prime95 or AIDA64 extreme) runs fine. I'm using 4790k with a H110i GT on top, overclock at 4.6 with 1.280V (sugguested OC in AsRock bios). Aida64 runs stable (1h test) between 60-70 degrees.

Did I loose the lottery with this one? Or is this fine and I can push it further and just not run the heat test?

Thanks.

4.6 is already quite a reasonable overclock. Try to tone down the voltages bit by bit while still keeping the 46x multiplier. Stop reducing voltage when the CPU becomes unstable. Reducing the voltage is a way to reduce heat output (I think?). You can always dial back to 4.5Ghz.

Also, 95 Deg C with a water cooler? Thats a bit harsh, considering you only have <1.3V. Most people can hit 1.3V no problem with an air cooler. Check your mounting properly, thermal paste, pumps, etc.

You are not alone. This is happening to me as well (same CPU) on Prime95 and I just installed a custom water cooling loop. At first I thought it was my loop or the CPU block was not installed correctly (never tried Prime95 on this PC before), but now I'm thinking this might be a "normal" thing in this CPU. The temps are not normal tho.

There are some people saying the latest version of Prime95 just goes nuts when stress testing, but I wasn't able to confirm this.

In the real world, I never seen the CPU go past 55-60 C while gaming or higher load. My idle temp is 33-34 C but it's a bit hot in the house right now.

PS: I ran the software on a AMD FX 8350 and temps never went above 60 C (I think).

PPS: My CPU is running at 4.7 Ghz / 1.280v / x47 core multiplier / 100 BCLK and has been stable at this setting for more than 6 months (i.e. never crashed or anything and I pretty much leave it on 24/7 for backup and scheduled tasks purposes which run overnight)

95 degrees ONLY in the Prime95 heat test, yes. Other stress tests can push CPU to 100% and keep it easily in 60-70 range at this OC, and it's running 32 degrees on idle in a room with 27 degress. (Edit: 60-70 degrees without fans going to 100%)

The mounting is fine.

Also, if default CPU has a turbo to 4.5, wouldn't it be pointless to run it any lower then 4.6?

What temps do you get running stress tests (other then Prime95 heat test) with that OC? And what's your voltage?

Just ran Aida64 for 3 mins and temps stayed at 58-64 C with the CPU at 100%. Prime95 would get to 90 C in less than 3 minutes.

I will try to run a proper test a bit later on if I don't forget :)

Voltage on the core is 1.280 right now.

Oh sorry, I just noticed you said voltage in your 1st post. Was that the heat test in Prime95? Mine jump nearly instantly to 95+

DONT use prime 95 on haswell CPUs it forces them to use more voltage than they need causing high temps if its fine in adia it fine most likely
