so i have some ripjaws ram at 1600mhz, i want 2400mhz coz why not. my mobo supports it but the 4790K says it supports 1600mhz and 1333mhz... 2400mhz will work fine im sure, but why does the 4790k show that it only supports 1333 and 1600mhz. does it mean that no matter what the ram will always be running at 2400mhz? please explain. By the way the ram is ddr3.

The RAM you have is fine, you will see minimal, if any performance improvement. I wouldn't recommend buying any more ram unless it's to increase the capacity (or for an X99 mobo, in which case you'd need DDR4 ram)

Save the money for something else.

As for compatibility, well, I don't really know why they'd say that as it clearly supports it as other's have it in their systems, Maybe it's that it supports those frequencies if the ram lacks an XMP profile (very uncommon nowadays)

2400 is more for when you are overclocking and raising fsb and ht etc and gives you some head room, as you know when overclocking somthing it always has its limits so in a way having ram faster than the native support of the cpu allows for less stresses on other parts, iv noticed with 1600 and 1866 they dont over clock well and alot of the time things like 2100 and 2400 are just 1866 guarented to over clock much like the ddr2 1066 sticks actually being 800 with a guarnted overclock

Keep in mind the CAS latency. If you end up getting really high CL, it'll actually end up slower. The lower the better.

Even so, assuming that you go from (for example) CL11 1600 MHz RAM to CL9 2400 MHz RAM, the performance gain will be minimal.

Like Jeb said, only get that RAM if you're considering upgrading its capacity.

Previously Trogdor8freebird

5800x | Asus x570 Pro Wifi (barely enough for 64GB apparently given it's 2133 and still crashes sometimes) | 64GB DDR4 | 3070 Ti 8GB | Love that whole weeb shit

It's a colour change, red isn't my scheme so yeah colour is the main thing. But the higher frequency sticks are cheaper.
