I'm looking to build a computer that will serve as a media/game server. I'm mainly focused on single threaded performance. I already have a case 1TB HDD, and PSU.

I would like this to be as cheap as possible. So what I need is a CPU, MOBO, 8GB+ ram, and a small OS SSD.

I'd like to get those parts for sub $300 USD. (and maybe another HDD)

My first thought was to use an older CPU/MOBO to help keep costs down, but I'm only familiar with Sandy Bridge and newer CPUs.

If I'm going in a completely wrong direction feel free to let me know. If you need me I'll be browsing wikipedia and ebay part hunting.

In need of an upgrade
