Hi, these are the parts I have chosen for my first build. I will be using it for heavy video editing, after effects compositing, colour grading and of course gaming. Was just wondering if I was right track to a good build that will last and I can upgrade.

the question isnt does he have it, the question is why doesnt he have it already if he's doing video editing.

Didn't think of that. But does he have network storage? :<

Yeah I already have plenty on external storage

Would settling for ddr3 ram, intel i7 4790k and going with gtx 980ti be a better option?

depends if you're going to need the extra 2 cores, or the extra GPU performance more.

for gaming 4790K and 980ti hands down. for the other stuff on your list, contact an expert. (i'm not.)

Ehhhhh... I don't know. The RAM is fairly negligible, but the extra two cores and four threads with the 5820K do matter for rendering. I'd say stick with the 5820K if you want the best rendering setup as GPU rendering isn't as... how do I put it... relevant? For video editing I don't think it'll have much use.

On the other hand, it'd be nice to have the kingpin for gaming, so it's honestly up to you. 5820K + DDR4 = Best rendering setup, 4790K + 980 Ti = better gaming setup. Though the 4790K is still great for rendering I should note.

Okay cool, I'll have a think about it. Looking like I'll have to wait a little longer n go with 5820k, DDR4 and 980ti. Think overall it's the best investment and looking at the future aspects of the build it's probably the better option.

In terms of the other components are they cool?

Hey chrisamckay,

The plan looks pretty good and powerful. The guys also gave you some good advice.
Regarding the storage, WD Black is a great performance drive. It is up to you to decide if you need more than 1TB storage in yor main build or not. I would suggest ensuring you have enough space as editing takes up a pretty good amount of storage. You can also consider adding some redundancy to your build (if you don't already have on your network storage). :)
