My GPU is a bit outdated and I think its time for a refresh.

Currently I'm sporting a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870. I have been thinking of a few options...

The cheapest option would be to crossfire with another 6870

The next option is to go with a used Gtx 770 that my friend is selling for $200

Then there is either the 970 or the R9 290x, which will take a bit of saving, or wait for upcoming releases I.e Radeon Rx 3xx series, or next Nvidia launch.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My next dilemma is whether or not my current system will be a bottleneck:

CPU: Fx - 8320

Ram: Kingston Hyper x Fury (1866)

Mid tier MoBo

Samsung 850 Evo

I can currently play Witcher 3 on High-Med settings w/ most post processing affects on at 1440 x 900 @ 30 - 35 frames

Will I see a noticeable performance boost in games?

Thanks all

Bear mind that your CPU will start bottlenecking GPUs at around 970 or higher in certain games. Ideally, you'd want to upgrade the CPU as well if you're going for a higher end GPU. A 280X is worth looking at though, it offers good performance for the price.

The 770 seems like a decent deal. See if he'll go down on the price though since a brand new 960/280x performs closely to the 770, and costs $200. If he won't go to like $150 on the price it'd be more worth it to buy this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150678

Upgrade your CPU if you want a better graphics card then a 770/960/280x because anything better will be bottlenecked

Your CPU will be absolutely fine for the settings you want in Witcher 3 with a GTX 970. But you should upgrade your CPU next chance you get after the GPU upgrade

Should I abandon my current platform, or go with something like an Fx - 9590

Or do some beefy water-cooling with a decent overclock?

Hold off until the next gen CPUs come since you'll be fine with that CPU for a while or just switch to an i5 now. Don't upgrade on AM3+ because the 9590 will give you almost nothing in terms of gaming performance compared to your current CPU
