What kind of case do you have? What kind of OS are you using for the home server?

Are you running it as anything else? Just FTP? NAS?

I'm not an expert, but with a little research I put this together: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1iPo2

If anybody has any suggestions in ways to improve it, then by all means, let me know.

sweet man thats great. what about a raid card? or shall i use WHS and just the MB

I was just about to say that. I think you should get one.  Which one I have no idea, i dont know much a bout servers, but I am also planning on building one in the future.  So raid card advice would be helpful for me as well.

its just an old dell, it has loads of room inside like, os will be either WHS 2011 or 2013 and using as a nas

Form factor of the case would help. If you're just running a NAS, you might want to look into FreeNAS or even just Window 7.

In Windows 7, you could just share a drive/file with different permissions.

Here you go: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1iUZf

Motherboard has 8 native sata 6gb/s ports and supports onboard raid 0, 1, 5, and 10.
