Worth the upgrade?

Chronic

I'm currently rocking a Asus DGX soundcard paired with a Steelseries 7H headset. I was wondering how much of a difference there is going from the DGX to something high end like an STX? Would I notice the different with the 7H and is it worth buying the STX whilst using a cheap-ish headset? I am also considering upgrading to something like a Sennheiser HD 650. Would it be better to get those head phones first, and then buy the soundcard in order to get the most out of it? (If I get could both, I would but money isn't limitless sadly)

On a side note, how does the phoebus compare to the STX in sound quality? Is the phoebus simply so expensive because it has ROG branding?

I would get the headphones first because I think you hear more of a difference than upgrading just the sound card.

my advice, stick with what you got.

if you go with the hd650's you'll want a dedicated headphone amp. the asus sound card doesn't count.

something like these at the minimum.

Will work for electronic components and parts

Im actually currently listening to the HD650's with the stx. works fine. However they are quite expensive, perhaps you could invest in something else and get some cheaper headphones. However if you only want to upgrade your sound the HD650's are pretty amazing and run fine off the stx.

If you read his post he says he has the DGX and can't afford to upgrade headphones and soundcard.

I would say the headphone upgrade will make a much bigger difference than the soundcard. As t0wer says though don't go for the HD650 if your going to use that DGX soundcard.

The HD650 are quite old anyway, there are much newer, easier driven models that should work fine with your DGX such as the Audio Technica AD900X or even the Shure SRH-1440 which are around a similar price and would likely suit you much better.

For spending this sort of money though it's a risk if you can't try them as you won't know how much of an upgrade they will be from your Steelseries 7H.
