I was just watching some youtube on my iPad, battery was at 80% and all of a sudden it shut off and said 0%.

This makes absolutely no sense, I just charged it. It is charging back up normally now.

It is an iPad mini 1st gen, had it for about 16 months now

This is the last damn Apple product I buy

Is this the end of its life?

I would make sure to back your things up. Batteries that start to do these things don't normally last much longer in my experience.

It should be fine. Try holding the home and power buttons for about 15-20 seconds until you see the Apple logo.

I have a 2 year old 1st gen Mini that is still running great and a 4 year old iPad 2 that still is running great.

Back it up just in case.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

That would work if the iPad wasn't turning on, this is a different situation.

OP if it does this again I would look into replacing it with a new model.

It could be a simple software glitch.

In my experience that rarely happens due to a software glitch.
