Would new thermal compound help?

Hi y'all

 

My brothers laptop (lenovo y560) has a lot of heat problems even though its cleaned out regularly from dust and whatnot. The laptop has never been disassembled really and i was wondering would applying new thermal compound help with having better thermals? The thing is, it got to the point where its running so hot now on warm summer days(even after taking precautions and cleaning) that it shuts down if anything demanding like games are run on it. I've got the laptop in 2009 so its 6 years with the same T. compound. Peeps say it doesnt have an expiration date but can it "dry" out or something.

Yes it can dry out and crack, how long depends on the kind but i would say that thermal paste has had it.

I would strongly agree with it being changed ASAP.

Nvidia is to Dr Dre Beets as AMD is to KFC.

One makes you broke, the other you can get more of and have a midnight snack from the fridge when hungry again. Once you go Nvidia, you go broked, turn into an Elitist, or get the incorrect amount of VRAM.

I don't if thermal compound can "dry out", but it can't hurt to clean the old stuff out put some new stuff on. Try to locate which part is overheating, so you can get a better idea on what to fix. If all else fails consider an upgrade.

For laptops, I would probably do a thermal paste replacement every year on a laptop.

 thx, probably its either the cpu or gpu(or both), its been identified way back i just cant remember correctly. Sadly, you could probably guess it but if upgrade would be even a slightest option, we'd already went with it, considering its a 6 year old laptop... :(

It can, my old laptops paste just crumbled off when i took it apart like a delicate pastry.
