I would get fallout 3 but it has a glitch if you have windows 7 to where you get to play like 10 mins. and then the game stops responding and shuts down, so be cautious.

:Q

You can easily get over 100 hours out of both games! Also they both have a great modding community behind both games!

I agree with joelthezombie that fallout 3 was far way better than New Vegas, but New Vegas has some nice mods that makes the game better than it is.

Fallout: New Vegas had a better combat system and interactive story, but Fallout 3 had a better world, in my opinion.

Both great games, but I do prefer Fallout 3 as well...

get both games! Fallout is one of my favorite series of all times.

I first rented fallout 3 on my PS3 around when it came out. I fell in love with it. When the game of the year edition came out, I bought it for my PS3. I bought Fallout New Vegas on PS3 when it first came out. I bought all the DLC as they came out. Totally worth it.  Tons of gameplay in both games and the DLC's add even MORE!!, Although I probably squeezed more time into New Vegas. I actually Enjoyed New Vegas a little more. Fallout 3 has a better story line though. New Vegas is an updated version of fallout 3 with some new features that make the game easier to play. Also there is more quests in Fallout New Vegas (I think).

When I saw these game on steam I was quick to buy them. (even though I have both games on PS3 that I can play at anytime)

I bought Fallout 3:GOTY for $5

and Fallout New Vegas : ultimate edition for $5.

$10 for probably 200-400 hours of great gameplay. It's a great buy.

Yes. you should get FO3 as well, play 3 or NV it doesn't matter both are really good, (i recommend playing 3 first, then NV)
Also don't forget to mod it! : D
if you want a guide on how to mod the game Gopher made great videos on modding fo3, (the general principles and rules apply to elder scrolls games too)

Don't mod it right away i say, play for a bit. See if ye like as it is. That way you can pick and choose the mods which will enhance your game to your liking

New Vegas is a great game, especially for $5 with all the DLC. I personally like Fallout 3 better but I would recommend just getting both because they are both awesome

I think obsidian or something made new Vegas so it wasn't Bethesda but they did an admirable job. It was problematic at first cause of bad bad glitches but they patched it up well

I personally prefer New Vegas ten fold over Fallout 3. The one big issue I have with Bethesda games is the lack of good dialogue, quests (Although Bethesda occasionally does have great quests here and there, I find the vast majority of them to be un appealing), and characters. Playing through Fallout 3, I never once felt connected to the world. The NPCs were all forgettable. New Vegas has the best of both worlds. Obsidian writes great dialogue and story and makes great characters with believable personalities. Combined that with the beautifully (Or in Fallout's case desolate) crafted world and Vegas ended up being one of my favorite games.

I haven't really enjoyed a Bethesda made game since Morrowind. The first time I saw Oblivion, all I could think of was "generic fantasy". Especially compared to giant Mushroom Houses and wizard towers and huge insect like creatures.
