Typically, how far away is the closest node/fibre box from the exchange? 1km or thereabouts? I heard FTTN uses vectored VDSL2. If only I can figure out how long the existing copper line will be I could probably figure out what kind of speeds I could get.

(getting NBN next year apparently)

Well I think i'm about 4kms away from my hub and my current copper speed is about 1.5 mbps or faster sometimes.

But I am very lucky because the fiber in our area is completed all we need to do is ring our ISP and get a NBN plan, also it's FTTP. :)

At 4km FTTP is pretty much consistent.

It's not a question of how far away the "node" is from the exchange because that part of the network is replaced with fibre. It's more about how far away your modem is from the node. Based on the speed their political slogans say "most" people being able to get that they're probably aiming for 50% of people to be within 600m. Which logic would dictate means some people will be just over 1km away.

Basically what speed you'll get is a gamble. You could get a bit over 100Mbps if you're very lucky and they drop a cabinet on your verge. I'd suspect that most people will get something around 50Mbps or so assuming all goes well. However you might be unlucky with both distance and copper condition get under 25Mbps. It's a hell of a lot better than ADSL2 but it ain't magic. You'll still be a part of the copper lottery.

I'm about 1.3-1.4km away from the exchange currently and get 16/0.8.

EDIT: http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/estimates my cable length to be about 1.8km. The former is just the road length measured in Google Earth.

Well my point was that they're not really using the exchanges anymore with FTTN, that's kinda the point of it. So what distance you end up from the node won't have much at all to do with how far from the exchange right now. The only thing that will have any baring on it is the condition of the copper.... which in your case is probably a good thing. I'm about the same distance from the exchange as you are and I get about half the speed you are
