I just bought a brand new 4770k and I opened the box (which was sealed) to find these strange marks. Take a look at the picture you will see that there are lines that run vertically so the IHS doesn't look shiny and new like my 2600k did.

I don't have a board yet so I can't test it. Has anyone else seen this sort of thing? Its not a scratch because it runs perfectly down the left and the right side of the IHS. Looks like it might have come from the the stamp they use to put the text on the IHS. Unfortunately the picture I took couldn't capture the scratch/mark really well but you can see part of it on the top right.

I think I see it and what it looks like is a piece of machined metal. Seems normal defects happen. Hard to tell from the picture but it looks like the mark is just worn differently. I wouldn't worry to much. Thermal paste will fill in the gap if there is one anyways.

And if you want to believe that one dude who has youtube videos, don't know who he is but basically was calling out people calling the cpu a delicate peice of hardware and throwing it around and scratching it which is retarded and so is he in my opinion, that it should be fine.

Well that's good. I haven't seen any marks like this on any Intel CPU before that was clean out of the box. Made me worry a little since the store I bought it from is about 500 miles away :)

I can't return it unless I get the Intel warranty thing along with it so hopefully its a good chip.

It looks to be something that happened during the machining process. If you find it to be faulty you can contact Intel Support to see if it is covered by warranty. If not, you could always lap your CPU to achieve a flat surface, however this will void your warranty if it is still applicable.

Thanks,

That lapping thing seems interesting and I have never heard of it. Maybe break out my old 955BE haha.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to practice on an old CPU. You can get P4's for about £2 now.
