I want to build a pfsense machine (or something similar). I've tried using an old machine but it didn't support vpn. I'm trying to find out what the I would need specs wise as I'm capable of building but spec illiterate if that makes sense. As in protocols that networking supports and cpu requirements for the networking. I have a 200Mbps home connection. Both up and down. It would need to be able to support this. My pc I'm currently using the vpn on can come very close to this speed most days. Does anyone have any experience with pfsense? I'd like to keep the cost between $300 to $500 USD. The less expensive the better. I'd also like it to be a small machine. Am I expecting too much? Would buying an actual appliance from them be more cost effective? Thank you in advance for any input.

Edit: I have a Nighthawk x3 for my router so it would essentially only need to be capable of being a firewall and vpn machine. My whole house is also hardwired with cat6 and I have an unmanaged 24 port switch.

I'll offer you an alternative. How about a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite? They're about $100 and they're pretty featured packed. Can host a VPN off of it too. Only thing is it doesn't do much firewall stuff, but unless you're a prime target (running lots of servers, have confidential data etc) you shouldn't need more than a statefull firewall.
