Mobile Encryption

As you can see, I'm from Australia, the land of the watched.

 

I know a bit about encryption and VPNs and what-not on the desktop side, but I have no clue when it comes to phone encryption. What options are there for all 3 platforms and what's best? (Yes, including WP8.1)

android 5+ has encryption enabled by default (though it isn't as secure as when you set a password).

 

it really doesn't slwo the device down that much i will tell you that if you're running a custom rom once you encrypt there is no way to flash a new rom until you have done a full wipe.

But this is just hardware encryption, not communication encryption, isn't it?
