cat5 vs cat6

bromargaming

So i need a 50 ft ethernet cable for my pc, but i was wondering if i should get cat5 or cat6. I known cat6 is newer and faster, but my internet is only max 50mbs download.

So i it worth it to get cat6 for like 10 bucks more?

Well, Cat6 will allow you to go longer distances and leaves you room to take advantage of faster internet speeds (WHEN prices become reasonable -- which won't be for at least 5-10 years imo). So is it worth it.....not really.

The difference between cat 5 and cat 6 is the extra insulation and its strength. but it is only used in large commercial buildings like offices where you need more that a couple of 100 meters of it. I see no point in using cat6 for this example, since it does not actually affect speed or latency

Cat 6 is generally useful if you want fast LAN speeds, like if you want fast data rates between your PC and a NAS. Having said that, I get 800mbps over cat 5e.

Do not get cat5! Get atleast cat5e, if you every plan on having a media server or NAS cat6 may be worth it for long runs.

Cat5 is only good for 10/100Mbps

Cat 5e up to 1Gbps

and Cat 6 also up to 1Gbps

Cat 7 is suppose to support up to 10Gbps

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Cat 6 is capable of 10Gbps but only to about 50 meters. Cat 6A is capable of 10Gbps for the full 100 meters

Personally I'd go with the Cat 6 cable if it's only $10 more. Couldn't hurt.

Faster internet speeds are coming sooner than you might think. I live in Austin, Texas where google fiber is popping up all over the place and even though I can't get fiber to my house the cable company bumped us up from 30Mbps to 200Mbps for free. When Docsis 3.1 rolls around later this year you may not even need fiber to see 1Gbps+ speeds.

We have TWC. We pay for 200/20 but we get faster than that.
