PoE problems with Camera

It works! The 48V 1.25A PSU came yesterday and it works now. In conclusion: The Camera works with 12V if you plug it directly into the cam, but you need a 48V PSU for your PoE injector if you want to use that.

Hello,

I need help with the setup for an IP camera. This is what i what i have at home:

Camera

If i plug in the camera only with the power plug and a LAN cable it works perfectly. But if I use the injector (same power supply) it wont power on.
Am I missing something? I dont know what i´m doing wrong, please help me.

Did you check your LAN cable? If you terminated it could be missing a link. Also check if you got the right sides.

I tested 3 different ones. I dont think that all of them are broken :D

 

Of course. And I guess you checked and plugged the cables in the right sides, happened to me quite a few times. By the ratings the Injector seems to support your voltage. Did you connect only one camera?

Yes, only the camera. i bought a big one because i want to add more in the future, if i can get the first one to work...

I connected the switch to the "LAN" side of the injector and the cam to the "PoE" side and tried both button orientations.

To add more devices you are going to need a higher voltage PSU. But the max is 48V meaning you can add only 3 more devices. Anyways back your issue, it could be that the injector is broken or that it distributes the 12V across all ports meaning you get ~1.5V per port. Does the power LED on the injector turn on?

The only way to check how much voltage you get is to measure it with a voltmeter(multimeter). If you have one, plug the RJ45 cable into the PoE injector and probe each contact on the other side until you get a reading.

I dont have a multimeter, but the Led turns on :D

or do I have to buy a 48V psu if i want to use poe? never used it before...

You are going to need a bigger PSU you could get a 48V one I guess. The thing is, when you plug it the 12V PSU into the injector and the other end into the camera you are essentially getting ~10V to your device, and this is likely the cause of the issue.

I've seen cheaper less well made injectors do more bad than good, I would look at it first if you are sure all connections are correct and everything else is setup properly.

Do you have any other PoE capable devices? You might want to return the injector and get something separate PoE injector for every device.

 

i grabbed a multimeter from a friend... i can measure the same voltages at the end of the lan cable and the power supply. A little less than 14V
