So ive had this myth in my head since 2003 or something, that powering off your computer without the power button (aka pulling out the power cable) would lead to hardware damage, and create much no-good within your computer

is this true, or does it only corrupt your software, like ive heard other people talking about

my guess is that this myth is really outdated, and no longer apply, since my parents (that told me this) had computer knowledge from the early 90s

I didn't pay too much attention to PC tech too much up until a couple years ago, but from Windows wanting to run a disk check when I do a hard reboot there's still a possibility that something can be corrupted software-wise.

Hardware-wise, there's safety features built into stuff today to stop most if not all of those potential dangers from happening at all.

I've done that so many times, nothing has happened.

same here, but im getting worried, a storm is comming

If lightning strikes, just make sure you have a good power strip. If not, just pray to god your pc isn't running when it hits.

It's true, simply because hard drives don't like power being pulled from them at random. You can get some corrupted data or a dead hdd in worst case scenarios. Everything else should be just fine because decent power supplies have enough safety measures for this to not be a problem. So if there are any hdds in your system, you should shut it off "properly": Otherwise it doesn't really make a difference.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

my OS is on a SSD, so the only thing that is maybe going to be lost are all my games, and my heart

also, if i get a BSOD, does that count as "shuting it of the bad way"?

Well that depends... If you are actually doing something, like a virus scan, or disk de-fragmenting, than yes, this can do some bad stuff to you computer. But other wise, your fine,

does playing a game count?

or does it just hurt the game files then?

Make sure your internet hardware is too. Power spikes can end up going through ethernet cords and frying everything.
