Is it okay to directly plug my computer to the ethernet port in the wall

Fishsticks

So being a total noob at networking and finally getting a proper internet connection(1Gbps for $40),

i was wondering if connecting my computer directly to the wall port has any problems.

And i do not need WiFi we rarely went over 50% of our data limit cap for mobile, so i was thinking I could save a bit by not buying a router

That depends... What exactly is behind those "Ethernet ports" ..? Like, is there a server room? Switchboard? Anything that would show that something is actually inside those ports?

If not, then you'll need a modem or figure out something to do "behind the walls".

Make a choice on an event of lighting strike or ESD, you want a dead router or a dead pc lol

You need a modem to interpret the signals.

So i need a modem between the computer and the wall. Since as far as i know there is nothing behind the wall except a cable running back to the ISP.

You are living in Singapore right? Which ISP did you apply from? Basically the ISP will provide you with a modem already. Just that if you need to get the router (if they did not provide you). But if you do not need WiFi at all and only 1 computer, then you do not need to get the router. Just connect the Ethernet cable from the modem (which your ISP will provide you) to your computer will do.

Yeah signing for the M1 contract. They did say the router is not provided. But not so sure about the modem

My friend also sign up for the M1 fiber. They will provide you with the modem but for the router you will need to buy yourself. So for your case, no issue as you do not need the WiFi at all. Just connect the modem to your computer will do. I realized you mentioned something like connect to the wall. Do you mean that when you renovate your house, you already had cables already? If that is the case, then connect the modem to the wall socket then your computer to the other wall socket (Not sure if you understand me anot.). :P

When i said connect to the wall i meant connecting it to the port OpenNet installed when the came around to install the fiber. So i am pretty sure i need the modem between the computer and the wall.

Oh ok. My bad. Now I understand what you meant.

1st. Connect the modem provided by M1 to the OpenNet Fiber box thingy.

2nd. Connect a Ethernet Cable from the modem to your Computer.

3rd. Enjoy the high speed internet.

Hope it helps you. :)

Before having the ISP come out there (unless they do 3rd-party jobs) have a network IT come in and essentially "activate" the ethernet port(s) that you need. That may entail getting a router, but if ISP doesn't provide it anyways...

The ISP or OpenNet (the company in my country that was contracted to install fiber to all the homes) do send a person down to activate the port when you get a contract.

Great, then you're all set.

Sorry, I had to bite my lip on a lot of my networking "knowledge" that I felt may or may not apply in Singapore, since I know nothing about it. Only that I could point to you on a map.

But, from the sound of things; looks like you've got your answer(s).
