what does it do if you only leave the 4gb stick in.

i have 6 gig of ram 2gig and 4gig ram and how i can get 6 gig of ram on asus m5a78l-m/usb3

motherboard it says i have 2 gigs

 

Ram might not be compatible? One could be at one speed while the other is at a different speed, bands could be different. Timing could be different. Causing it to only want to read one or the other. It's best to keep your ram matched.
