Should I go x99 or z97 for a gaming/workstation build? I will be gaming a little bit but I won't really be pushing my system in both games and work. I am just wondering if it is worth it to go x99 or not. At the moment i am pretty confident with z97 because i think that would work fine for me. But what do you think. If i was to go x99 i would have an intel i7 5820k 2133mhz ddr4 16gb e.c.t. but with z97 i would have similar memory (16gb ddr3 cas 9 2133mhz) but a intel i7 4790k. Do you think this is fine or should I go x99 or maybe even a better i7 cpu for z97. Anyway what do you think?

Thank you!

No need for even z97 I'd say if you're just gonna be doing basic stuff :) regular i5-4690 and a H97 maybe?

Depends on what work you do and how often you do it.

I will be gaming also spreadsheets and internet browsing general use e.c.t. But I might be doing slightly more demanding work later on so this is why i am going this way. I might not need too much performance now but I will later on.

What kind of work later on? Video editing work and 3D modelling would probably favour X99

RIP, I accidentally went off the page and have to retype again. There goes my 5 min post.. -Sigh

It depends on whether you have the budget and if you need the extra 2 cores.

RAM does not impact performance much, as linus proved here:

The only variable will be the extra 2 cores on the 5820k compared to the 4790k. Do you really need them extra 2 cores? Remember that also if you were to go for a x99 build, the build overall will be much more expensive (DDR4 RAM, x99 Motherboard, Processor) when compared to a 4790k.

However, if you were to go with the 4790k, you will not have any upgrade paths when compared to the 5820k (5820k -> 5930k -> 5960X If you need the POWERRRRRR that is.).

Also, the 5820k has more Pcie lanes when compared to the 4790k (28 vs 16) meaning that the 5820k will perform better with 3 or more graphic cards.

If not much performance now, just later on go with z97 and upgrade later if the z97 set isn't satisfying you.

Yeah I think the overall price to performance is better with the z97 and also i don't think that i really need the extra cores.

Thank's for the help!

Z97 should be fine for right now, even with the new processors coming out and everything. Z97 will still perform fine for gaming and work loads especially if the machine you're building is new. X99 is for content creation for the most part, just take the easier and cheaper route with Z97.
