I will be using the build mainly for gaming and video editing. I live in the UK and my budget is £45.

EDIT: I have already ordered the case. :(

Pure Rock: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/be-quiet-cpu-cooler-bk009

It performs similarly to the 212 Evo and is much quieter.

Hi,

I'm in the middle of making a new gaming build. It will have a FX-6300 which I plan to overclock. I have researched and nearly everybody points to the Hyper 212 Evo. I looked into it but found out that it doesn't fit my case (CiT Neptune). Does anybody have a good alternative that would adequately overclock the 6300? (I would prefer if the cooler was fairly quiet but not necessary)

Thanks,

Does it have to be that case? If you haven't ordered it yet I would recommend that you just get a similarly priced case that will hold all your hardware. a Corsair SPEC- 0 case is awesome for the money.

Check dark rock's homepage. They build a similar cooler that doesn't require quite as much headroom.

Are you referring to the Dark Rock Pro 3?

Think so. had to do a bit of research with someone with a similar problem recently. It's ever so slightly more compact. If you come close, but not quite it's what I would recommend. slightly better thermal profile, but also more expensive than a 212 evo.

Hi, the Pro version is out of my budget but would the Dark Rock 3 be ok?

EDIT: The Pure Rock is taller than the Hyper 212 Evo so it wouldn't fit. nvm

There is the L9i From Noctua, Cheap, Small and Powerful.

My advice is always the same. Figure out the max TDP your chip can put out while overclocking/ under heavy load. Match, or slightly exceed it with a cooler. All coolers thermal disapation stats can be examined on the manufacturer's spec sheets. To give you an idea. (and I'm lazy and can't be arsed double checking these.

Stock intel cooler is about 75W TDP. Evo 212 is about 125TDP, and dark rock 3 is about 135, or 145 TDP. If you're happy with it, and it fits, then go for it.

Oh and if the 212 Evo won't fit either of the Rocks won't...

The Evo is: 159mm Tall

The Rocks are: 160 and 163.

CPU: Intel Core i7 5960X @4GHz cooled by a Corsair H110i GT | MBO: Asus X99 Sabertooth | RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 32GB DDR4 (4x8GB 2400MHz) | GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 980 | SSD: Samsung SM951 M.2 SSD | HDD: 1TB Western Digital Black Drive | PSU: Corsair HX750i | Case: Corsair Obsidian 450D

The Shadow Rock Slim has a TDP of 160W and its only £30, so it looks like I will be going for that

EDIT: Even though it's called "Slim", its bigger than the Shadow Rock :|

95W cooler on a processor that in it's max spec can push 130W?

You are right...Didn't see that. However, the Dark Rock is too tall.

CPU: Intel Core i7 5960X @4GHz cooled by a Corsair H110i GT | MBO: Asus X99 Sabertooth | RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 32GB DDR4 (4x8GB 2400MHz) | GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 980 | SSD: Samsung SM951 M.2 SSD | HDD: 1TB Western Digital Black Drive | PSU: Corsair HX750i | Case: Corsair Obsidian 450D

Sounds like a plan.

BTW my advice in any similar situation is always check the spec sheets first. AMD's lists the heat you can expect the processor to produce. Match that up, and slightly exceed it with a cooler, and you're fine. Be aware that the more quietly you want it to run, the more you'll have to exceed specs with the cooler.

It's small but hardly cheap and powerful. It's not that much better than the stock cooler.

Ok, so far I'm looking at either the Pro Rock or the Dark Rock 3. Would it be better to spend a bit more on the Dark Rock 3 or put that money into something else.

It's not really worth getting more than the Pure Rock unless you're a sucker for pushing as high of clocks as possible for the kick of it.

It fits. From the Q&A: http://www.cclonline.com/product/105682/CP-626-BLUE/Cases/CiT-Neptune-Gaming-Case/CAS0790/

The 212 Evo does fit barely, but I don't want to remove my side window fans.
