So, I'm currently in the process of my first computer build. Its been going fine and dandy, until I started having to plug in cables. So far I've installed CPU, CPU Fan, RAM, and GPU, but I have no idea where to plug in everything. For starters, I am using an ASROCK Extreme4 MOBO and a Rosewill Photon 750W Gold + PSU. There is a 24 pin connector for power to the MOBO but I am not sure which side to put in. There is one end with 1 24 pin cable and another with 1 18 pin cable and 1 4 pin cable. I am pretty sure you plug in the 24 pin connector to the PSU and the 2 cabled one to the MOBO, but I'm not sure. I feel like an idiot.

Also, does the CPU cable go with the ATX12v1?

With the mainboard connector either side doesn't fully fit in so I'm left hesitant which is right. Please help.

The 24 pin is keyed so it will only go into one way on the motherboard and you are correct about the CPU (EPS) cable is for the top left of the motherboard.

All power connectors their locking mechanisms in certain positions, so use that as a reference guide or is shaped physically in such a way, you cannot plug in the connectors the wrong way. At least when you plug things into the motherboard.

If you're confused to where all the cables should be plugged in, refer to your PSU and motherboard manual, they'll tell you exactly what to do.

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

put the 24 pin the way that the latch will lock into the mobo and you are correct . the 20+4 pin goes into the mobo.

Thanks guys.

The external build was only partially successful. I turned it on and the fans started spinning, but I got nothing from the monitor (HDMI). Then, it started turning on and off maybe spurred by me turning it on and off to see if it was working. Maybe a delay?

Then I started to smell something from the PSU. Maybe because its new? Whatever happened I can't get it to turn on anymore.

What does it smell like?

I honestly can't define it. It smelled a little bit like the PSU. Maybe plastic burning?

Oh that's not good, Take the PSU and do the paperclip method to see if it works by putting some fans to it or LED's to give it a small load.

What is your power supply? I had the same thing happen to me except I saw smoke from the motherboard.

Rosewill Photon 750W 80 + Gold

See here's the thing: Don't buy no name brand power supplies. Period. These bundles of shit are no good, and will likely take out another component should it (very likely) die or malfunction. Check brands, reviews, and ratings to make sure you're not buying a dud. Some fantastic brands include: Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic, and Antec. Throw out that crappy one and buy a new PSU. DO NOT CHEAP OUT ON IT.

Its Rosewill... Sure, Rosewill isn't very well-known but its out there. It had a lot of reviews, 86, and 4 stars. Today, I'm going to buy a replacement for stock cooler and see how that goes.

A burning or melted plastic smell from a psu is not good. Unplug and remove it. If you can still detect the odor with your nose near the psu intake grill or exhaust fan, the unit is most likely toast. Return the unit for replacement.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
