Yeah to be fair though some of them are cheaper than their core iX variant... also look through intel ark I know in past generations some Pentiums or i3s  have had some Xeon/Server features like ECC memory support and such and CPUs are already fairly reliable so Xeon binning isn't terribly needed on a small scale

I have another thread that I recently posted about a starter server build and someone mentioned something about a Pentium G3220 with 2 cores and about 3.0 something GHZ, I'm giving it a shot considering the low price and I found an ASUS starter board and even that seems pretty good on price

Okay, might I ask what the server processor is needed for?

Just because you're building a server doesn't mean you'll need a xeon. Until you get to the very high end there is no real difference between xeons and i5/i7s. Just the things like iGPU and ECC. So just pick any cpu that fits into your budget.

Xeons have more cores for a reason lol

Yeah they do, but if you're just gonna store data on them I doubt you'll be fully using them so they'll be an overkill.

Links that might help 1, 2, 3, 4

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

You could try to get a cheap x5650, 6 cores, a lot of power and quite cheap (below 100€ on ebay).

Or a opteron, or if you dont need a server grade processor an i3 or whatever.

You're right that there are xeons with more cores (like the E5 2699v3 for example) but what I meant is that the equivalent cpus like i7-4790 and xeon E3 1231v3 are basically identical. And there is no need to for the xeon just because you're building a server.
