So... The last week has been a weird one.

I had an EVGA SuperNova NEX650G. Finding out that it maybe wasn't as good as I thought it was, I exchanged it for an EVGA 650GS. Once I installed the new PSU and turned the PC on, I started hearing an odd soft clicking noise. Thinking that it was my PSU, I went back to the store that I bought it from and exchanged it for the same model. However, when I installed the second 650GS, the clicking noise was still there.

I was eventually able to boil it down to my mechanical hard drive (Seagate Barracuda 1TB). I bought a second Seagate, cloned the data from the old hard drive to the new one, took the old HDD out and put it away. However, the clicking noise remained.

Thinking that I had full on broken my HDD and that I was going to lose my data, I contacted the store and got their advice (which was yesterday). They suggested running a long generic Seatools test on the hard drive and see what it dug up. I had coincidentally bought some stuff for my PC which I was going to install that night, being a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO and an NZXT Grid+.

After successful installation of my new parts, the clicking of the hard drive seems to have disappeared or gone so quiet to the point that I don't notice it.

I suppose that it's not an issue anymore, but I'm just baffled. I will run a Seatools test tonght to see if it clicks again as that had it clicking like mad before.

Thoughts anyone?

Probably it suggest that it may have been a problem with your CPU Fan. Maybe it was off centre, and was sometimes scraping the side of the frame?

I don't think so.

I should have mentioned that I actually turned my system on with NO fans running (I turned Eco mode on the PSU) but the noise was still there.

It might be something is stuck in your gpu fan, or it could the psu

My graphics card is a GTX 960. At idle the fans don't spin at all, so I don't think it's that.

Also, the chances of two brand new PSUs having the same problem seems unlikely. :')

dvd player?

Don't have an optical drive installed.

See what I mean? I am baffled.

try waving a sound meter ( or a smartphone with the necessary apps) at the parts you find suspicious

I'll try that out.
