Questions about my computer

Go to solution Solved by Saucey,

Go into your BIOS and enable XMP.  Done.

I enabled XMP, there were two profiles, one for 2400MHz and one for 2133MHz, so i just went with the first profile (2400MHz). The memory status read 1.512V and is now running at 2400MHz!

I have an Intel i7 4770k with Kingston Beast 16GB DDR3-2400MHz ram. I was confused when I would check a program like Speccy or CPU-Z and find that my "DRAM Frequency" was only at 800MHz which is way less than what it is said to operate at. I have heard people say that it is impossible to get 2400MHz with this cpu, some say that it is possible to get 2400MHz with this cpu. I am just not sure what to think. I just want to clarify that I am even getting what I paid for, or if I just wasted money on higher MHz ram for nothing.

Do I have you on steam?

Also, motherboards dictate ram speed capabilities.

Also, ram speeds don't affect fps by more than about 1 fps.

Also, DDR= double data rate, double the 800

Also, enable xmp in the bios to have you ram go to 2400mhz

maybe you are looking at gpu memory?

I would check bios, but I doubt theres an issue. That processor i believe does cap out somewhere, but it is capable of at least 1866 MHz.

DDR means double data rate, so it is doubled.  When you are seeing 800Mhz, it really means 1600Mhz.  If you have 2400Mhz RAM, you probably haven't enabled XMP in the BIOS.  Go enable XMP in the BIOS and it should then run at 1200Mhz/2400Mhz.  This is all assuming you have a Z series motherboard.

i think when cpu caps he refers to the warning that pcpartpicker gives you (not exact same ram but is fast)

I wasn't purchasing this item just to get more frames in a game.

Just because Intel doesn't validate voltage over 1.5v, doesn't mean it won't work.  I run 2400Mhz 1.65v RAM perfectly fine, so does everyone else.  Its a non-issue.

Now, if you have an H or B series motherboard, then chances are you are limited to just 1600Mhz.

Never said you were, was just mentioning that so you wouldn't be to mad if you couldn't get it to run at the right speeds.

As @Faceman mentioned earlier, the effective speed (what is advertised) for DDR3 memory is double that DRAM's actual frequency.

In your screenshot, your DRAM is running at 2400MHz (~1200 MHz X 2 = ~2400 MHz). You are all set, and ready to go -- just needed to enable XMP in the BIOS.

Awesome! I wasn't even paying attention to that, well glad to know that it is operating at the correct speeds now. :D
