Hey guys, I've been thinking about picking up Project Cars or Assetto Corsa and after asking around for recommendations, I have a couple of questions. I currently have GT5 for PS3 and a lot of people are saying that it's really not that realistic. But I've read a lot of articles about how it is one of the most realistic driving simulators out there. What is it that makes a driving simulator realistic? Is GT as realistic as I've read about or is it really more of an arcade? Anyway, thanks for your answers!

GT is "realistic", but just not as close to real life as some other games, which go reeaallyy badass on the physics.

haha Gotchya. So compared to Project Cars for example, which one is more realistic? I've heard that Project Cars is "far more realistic".

The physics are similar but the actual gameplay dynamics of Project Cars are more realistic. As said by the person above me, it's not like GT where you just pick a car then go.

GT is a very good racing game. but it does suffer a bit in the sim department. that's where assetto corsa, iracing, and others come in. these games handle the sim name much better than gt. but there's always gonna be debate on which is the best sim around, so you might as well try out all of them and see which fits best.

pcars is more of a sim-arcade type of deal. it is pretty realistic but there's some weird stuff going on that can't be explained (sudden loss of grip) and it's still pretty buggy.

So essentially Gran Turismo is a good racing simulator in terms of physics, but falls short in the actual racing aspect of the simulation. So if I have GT should I pick up PCars? Will the experience be all that different?

yes, gt is a pretty good sim, but not as good as assetto corsa, iracing, etc. gt is called "the ultimate driving simulator" for a reason. as for pcars... i'm not sure what to think of it. the driving itself is decent enough to be enjoyable, but there's something iffy about it. like if there's a subtle handicap when you're racing (not referring to the aids), plus the weird stuff i said earlier. i'm guessing pcars is trying to be realistic but not be as hardcore as iracing or rfactor 2.

GT is realistic (physics wise) for a console game but its a far cry from PC sims, Project cars is better then it when you get the FFB tweak going  AC beats it to the curb, so does GT legends.

Also Project cars car list ios very limited and its career is A LOT more structured then GT has ever been.

GT might have something like a turbo charged championship. Where you can give anything under the sun as long as its turbo.

PC is going to be alot more strict in that you get this 1 car and only this car everyone will drive this car. So its alot more like a real racing series then GT.

At the end of the day if you are looking at console racers physics wise and "simulating an actual racing career"  Project cars easily beats out everything that has been made for consoles.

To add to what I said I find PCs carrer mode is ALOT better then ACs but if you dont have a wheel dont dip into Assetto Corsa yet, PC is at least coming to consoles so it will be much more accommodating for controller use.

If you have any specific questions about either feel free to ask ive been playing both for a long ass time.

Yeah I actually have a wheel that I use for Gran Turismo, man that thing is awesome. haha So between Project Cars and Assetto Corsa, which would you recommend? Which one is actually a more fun game??

If you want the better physics and FFB between the 2 get AC, if you want a better career mode get PC.

Personally I am enjoying PCs carrer mode more, I like you came from console racers (console gaming in general in my case) and I like the structured career mode, PC racing sims (and ive played alot) generally dont have nearly as good a career, I having played AC in a while but its career boils down to Here is a car, go race it against these other cars, or here is a car, go beat this time on this track. Project Cars as I mentioned before works more like a race series/calander I just strted it today but im starting with Karting each event consisists of 2 races the 1st race is standing start, the second is rolling start with starting position dictated by the results of event 1. So each discipline plays its own way from there you can go into open wheel racing where you work your way up to f1 cars, or I can branch off and go into touring cars which leads up to running lemans prototypes. Thats just a quick example though there are other things you can race too.

ALOT of people are talking shit about PCs FFB and i I agree its way to heavy stock, but I found this thread that helps it out and makes it from what ive seen quite nice,

http://forum.projectcarsgame.com/showthread.php?22938-Jack-Spade-FFB-Tweaker-Files

The issue with this tweak is Project Cars has a built in software lock on wheel rotation. For example my wheel is set for 900 degrees but if I drive a car with say..360 degree steering in real life the game will lock your steering (with very strong FFB) at that. This tweak does break that though, while the car will still only use 360 degrees you can steer past it...nothing extra will happen though, thankfully you can fix it so the software lock is re-enabled. while still using this tweak. (if you get Project Cars im happy to upload the software lock fixed version for you to download)

So ya im very much enjoying Project Cars with this FFB tweak (the fixed version with the software lock at least.

At the end of the day though I will tell you that you frankly cant go wrong with either really.

I also wanna adjust GT Legends, if you have a thing for old race cars (like me I just find them more interesting then modern race cars) its great if you can deal with some dated visuals.

As well DiRT Rally is simply amazing even in its current (very polished) Early Access state if you have a need for some rallying

Awesome! Thanks for that answer I really appreciate it! One last question and then I'll stop bothering you. if I get PC I'll probably get  it for my PS4. I have the ferrari F430 racing wheel which I believe has only like 360 degrees of rotation. Will my experience be hindered in any way from that FFB problem or my limited rotation? The wheel works extremely well with GT and Dirt 3 (which is awesome by the way), but I'm not sure about PC.

If I get one of these games I will need a racing chair and a driving wheel setup. It cost so much. :(

Id personally say you would be fine, that being said its hard for me to say 100% I use a Fanatec CSR with 900 degrees rotation.

The issue i mentioned with the software lock in Pc shouldnt be much of a problem for you though if you dont fix it/get one with it enabled...since I think everything but the Karts are at least 360 degrees

a rolling comp chair can still do you if thats all you have, what I do is take an ethernet cable and tuck it in behind the wheels and no more rolling. A wheel though ya...its a game changer for sure.

IRacing is the way to go for pure physics and is the most competitive racing out the.

I myself love iracing but there are a lot of things that can become annoying once you've been there a little while.

Assetto corsa is good fun for hot lapping and drifting in dedicated servers also modding is pretty good. Not as good as iracing in terms of racing.

Haven't tried project cars yet as pc is not setup in my room yet but I imagine looking at game play that it is much like Assetto corsa in terms of hot lapping and online racing.

In conclusion each one offers different things it depends what you want.

Personally I would suggest trying Assetto corsa or project cars before iracing as it can be expensive and has a fairly steep Learning curve.

If you do decide to jump on the band wagon (iracing) wait for the deals that pop up from time to time to save some money and the forum is your friend!

Hope that helps.

Just for clarification when I mentioned dirt I was refering to this http://store.steampowered.com/app/310560/Its a pretty hardcore sim, not sure if you misunderstoof or were just bringing up dirt 3 but ya figured id clearify.

Assetto Corsa is a fantastic sim. The AI driving isn't quite up to par so the only really good racing you'll find will be in online. The physics on the other hand are spot on. The tracks are perfect, the cars are fun, and you can spend countless hours hot-lapping.
