Best VM Software?

Hi, I'm wondering what the most powerful Virtual Machine software I can use is. I've tried VirtualBox but it doesn't allocate enough resources to do anything useful. I want something I can run Linux and Windows 10 on.

I use vmware. It's expensive if you have to buy it all by yourself, but in the end it's the best.

Virtualbox hands down.  Use it all the time for running distros.

This doesn't make any sense. You can allocate as much resources as your hardware requires.

 

That said, vmware (the paid version) is better overall.

I use VirtualBox, and it only allows me to allocate like 10% GPU power and the CPU power is horrid.

Then you're not using it correctly. No virtualization software allows you to allocate GPU "power".

More along the lines of VRAM and cores etc. 'power' is a fairly loose term. My VMs usually run like a 2003 dell laptop.

I have all my resources for VMs maxed out and still runs terrible. I assumed this was an allocation problem.

That VRAM limit is for 2D virtual graphics. If you have 3D acceleration turned on there is no limit to VRAM. vmware may give better results so give that a try; however it can't compensate for overtaxed hardware.

To do GPU power allocation you need VM software little more hardcore than Virtualbox or VMware. ESXi KVM or Xen will let you allocate GPU power that will be useful

I use hyper-v comes built into windows 8 + just need to enable it from add features.

Free options? Hyper-V and KVM are what I use, obviously depending on what the host system is running. I mostly just run servers to SSH/FTP in to for development or windows then use RDP so I can't speak for performance but it "feels snappy" in windows RDP with both.

VMware solutions are the most "powerful" options you can get. On the free side, Virtualbox is the most features packed. I use VMware Player at home because I find it faster than VirtualBox, but miss the snapshots feature available in Virtualbox or VMware Workstation (~250$).

ESX is vmware.

yes it is made by them BUT its not the same as the "softer" VM program. i use virtualbox for the VMs i dont care much about so dont know what VMware's equivilant is

vmware workstation. More than adequate for anything that an individual is likely to be doing.

vmware is company not a product. would be like saying Microsoft when asked for an OS. Also, there is question. You should be looking at what meets your requirements, some environments Hyper-V works best, others ESXi. All depends what your requirements are.

Hyper-V, Virtualbox and Workstation. This is what you look to be after. These will all do the same thing. Depending on if your CPU supports VT-X or VT-D you might want to make sure they are enabled in your bios, as they will make things quicker.

 

You will also find that some older OS just wont work as well, this will simply due to the OS not being aware that it is virtualised, and thinks it is runing on bare metal.
