Is there any difference between the 970 and 990FX chipset? Going to overclock an FX-8350.

How many PCs are you building?

2. One is for a friend and another one is a video editing/rendering one.

the 990 has a better power delivery system than the 970.

The chipset is not involved in the power delivery. That said, most high end motherboards with good power delivery do use 990FX.

Well I was referring to the 990 motherboards as a whole. Since you'd need a better system than what a 970 board has in order to not melt or burn anything

like what happened here.

Sure. But what happened there is because they tried to run a 220W processor on a board with really basic power delivery, not because the board had a 970 chipset. There are 970 boards with much better power delivery than that, like the MSI 970 Gaming.
