So i picked up a couple reference R9 290's and one of them seems to be consistently performing worse than the other. At this point i'm certain it's the card itself and not any software problems but i'm not sure why it's happening. Any idea's? I've tried all the basic and obvious solutions. I did try different benchmarking programs like 3D mark and there doesn't seem to be as big of a difference in performance as there does with Unigine valley but the fact that there is a difference in Unigine at all is bugging me.

Any help is much appreciated.

Updated AMD Drivers.

Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers.

Tested on two different computers with completely different hardware and operating systems, Same results.

Updated to the newest bios.

Tried running fans at 100% to bring the temps way down to make sure no thermal throttling was occurring.

Test the card in a different PCIE slot.

Oh and the screenshots i provided are not on the newest AMD drivers but it made no difference in terms of scores and they're the only screenshots i had.

I should have posted this in Troubleshooting btw sorry about that. I almost never post in that sections so i didn't think about it.

The temperature on both of those cards seems out of whack,  Also, are you testing with both of them on the same pci e slot?  If one slot is running 8x vs one running 16x that would make a marginal difference.  Make sure that the aren't being throttled during the test.  Use MSI afterburner and make sure the core clock remains constant during the whole test.

I guess they aren't in the system at the same time?

For some reason unigine valley does not record temps on R9 290/x's properly. Both cards are reference AMD cards running 92c (These cards are apparently designed to run at 95c) under load and were tested separately in a PCIE X16 slot.

I'll check out the clock speed using MSI afterburner thanks for that idea.

Can you give us the models of video cards you're using? Their might be a bigger difference between the two.

Also, with these newer cards the clock speed ramps up and down based on the heat and voltage of the GPU. You might simply have a better binned GPU that stays cooler thus the clock speeds are ramped up a lot higher.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Sapphire AMD R9 290. All AMD reference 290/x's are the same. I've ran the cards on 100% fan speed which dropped the temperatures significantly, No thermal throttling is occurring. I had a Gigabyte R9 290 prior to this and the performance was the same as the other card i have now that is not under performing.

Your CPU will be a massive bottleneck here if you run them in Crossfire. But It seems as if you are testing them singly in benchmarks?

Yes i am testing them by themselves.

Terve!

Have you checked the frequencies on the chips?

If one of them just throttles randomly, you got the thing.

From my side you are right. There should not be that much of a difference.

Sayonara!

Neither of the cards are throttling.
