Greetings.

I have been on this site a little bit but had an issue with signing up, luckily my friend was able to ask and a mod helped get things sorted! I realize this question gets asked probably 200 times a week, and while they all have been answered I feel my specific situation is different enough to warrant asking.

I currently have a Gigabyte 7970 oc windforce 3x. I want to upgrade my monitor but currently with all the cool new tech around I'm really not comfortable buying just yet. I want to wait about a year maybe a bit longer for the whole freesync/Gsync tech too mature before buying into it. I am going to be looking at something like a 1440p 144hz ISP (only one exists right now I think, the rog gsync one). That said even at 1080p 60hz my 7970 is showing its age especially with the latest releases. GTA 5 made my poor old card its bitch.

I was thinking of just getting a new card but to get a real upgrade I am looking at 500 bucks were I live. Then I remembered that the 280X crossfires just fine with my 7970 as its just a re badge. That means i can do crossfire and get the extra performance I am looking for, for about 220 dollars less. Normally when looking to upgrade I would go new card every single time, this time I am not looking for my GPU solution to be rock solid for 2 to 3 years but instead only one. with Nvidia line up being 8 months old, I figure adding the second card with breath enough life into my system to make it too the next generation were I can get a new monitor and a better suiting GPU solution.

Appreciate any help.

Edit: I checked to make sure also, my PSU can more then handle a second card and my motherboard supports it.

Wait a little while longer until AMD's new 3xx series come out ina month or two, more options+slight price drops.

My Gigabyte R9 280x is a fucking BOSS, really. It pulls off 1080p gaming on ultra without much fuss.

To summarize, wait for the 3xx series and pick a single GPU.

Mobo: Gigabyte 970A-DS3P CPU: AMD FX 8350 RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3 8gb (2x4gb@1600Mhz) GPU: Gigabyte R9 280x (factory oc) PSU: Thermaltake SmartSE 730w Case: Corsair 200R

one thing I find silly about these forumns is people always say wait. I don't think he wants to wait. I'd get the 280x since you said newer games are making your current GPU it's bitch.

There's nothing to loose so why not wait a month?

Price drops and new cards are always nice when you are in the market for a new GPU, especially when they are right around the corner.

Thanks for the input, sorry I had work so couldn't reply. I will defiantly wait for a sale for a 280X if that is the way I go. However I may have worded the question poorly. I was wondering if its wise to buy a second card to boost performance for the 12 months I need it to wait out Gsync/freesync for more options or is a single card far superior. By the end of that 12 months not only should there be more Gsync/freesync monitors but also the new line of Nvidia.

While the current gen is amazing if I was to go with Gsync it seems crazy to buy cards suitable for my new monitor when it might be 12 months before I get it, I would rather buy something to give me enough performance until I buy the new screen and new graphics cards too.
