Heey fellas,

im building a new HTPC out of spare parts and looking for a psu.

All the psu calculators tell me to use a 600~700W psu, but i'm wondering what u guy's think.

Specs are,

i7-870 (socket1156)

ATi 4650  (or something, no psu plug required)

5+ HDD's (data)

1 SSD (boot)

I'm thinking a 450~500W would be enough, it's a HTPC, doesnt really do anything most of the time.

Greetz

I would get a cx430, cheap and reliable, has all the crap you need.

300W would be more than enough...

Bad idea i think, I shoved a 300w dell psu which is 80+ gold with a i7 2600 and a radeon 6450. I had problems went it went under load, was a basic rendering machine and the dell psu was lying there. As he cant get a 300w 80+ gold psu he will have a lot of problems when and if that pc is ever under load.

My bad he can get a gold 300w psu but it would cost a lot so a cx430 would be the way to go.

I would recommend Seasonic X400FL/460/520. It is completely fan-less and fully modular. Yes, it is pricey but totally worth it IMO.

If the HTPC is going to be on a media shelf in the same room you are watching movies/tv you are going to truly appreciate silence. Many PSU's are not loud by any stretch but they do give off background noise which can be annoying in this particular application. I use the 460W in mine and I got the 400W for my dad's as well, no regrets.

alienware ships pc`s with i7 and gtx 660 OEM(gk104,like a 760) with 330W psu....

dell psu is s***. if he gets something from a tier 1 OEM like seasonic or superflower then he will not have any problem.and plus, look at his specs.he does not need a high wattage psu.

Hmm i remember it as a 430w 80+ platinum psu, anyways why the dell do dell not sell their psus as they are very high quality cpus. If they got their shit together and sold the parts at a decent price they could dominate the lower end market for low watt power supplies and if they tried then they could make a mark in the gaming market. Im sure they would get some bad rep due to being dell but at least its not gateway.

Which explains the answer as to why optiplex pcs seem to last forever especially during the time that other power supply companies were in the shit for breaking after a short amount of time. Ive built quite a lot of pcs now in many different markets for low end and the high end. Of course by something like a seasonic but after fixing quite a few dell pcs i look inside the psu to see any problems and its well built, the build quality is very close or even equal to seasonic. Anyways you need to keep your fanboy level to a minimum, take away the fact that its made by dell or someone that supplies them to dell, its a great power supply. Having an open mind will help you in many situations in your lifetime. Weirdly a 3 year old dell psu can handle the lower power state(c6 i think) for haswell, thats weird.

No point getting a cx430m as its a HTPC, i dont think the guy will care about cable managing and the temps dont really matter that those low end scales.

A new psu is not gonna happen, all the parts are second hand. And the whole build, along with the casemod the htpc will be housed in is as cheap as i can get it. I do have a Sharkoon 450w liying around i can use untill i need more molex leads for hdd's.

Cable management is no issue, my case is a yeong yong cube with two compatments.

Also on a sidenote, once the casemod is done i will make a buildlog for it on this forum.
