Win 7 to Win 8.1

I currently have Win 7 but if I want to upgrade to Win 8.1, do I have to do a complete new install? Losing all my files.

Haswell i5 4670k OC (4.0 GHz 1.2v)  // GTX 970 FTW plus // MSI Z87 G45 // 8 GB G.SKILL RAM // ASUS 24 in 144 Hertz // Kingston SSD 240 GB

you can do an "upgrade" where you'll keep all your files but best wait for windows 10, which will be free for windows 7 and 8.1 users
