Do i need and upgrade?

So my question to you is, do i need to upgrade my cpu?

 

So Im running a I7 920 with a R9 290x. I understand the GPU might not but what about my cpu? Should I invest into getting a new motherboard, cpu and cpu cooler?

The only think i could say to get a upgrade on would be the cpu. But the difference in performance isn't really significant thanks to intels ideal of 10% increase per gen, meaning you're only ~20% off of what an equivalent i7 would be.

 

In short, Nope. You're fine for quite a while longer.

Actually it depends on you. Are you ok with your current PC performance? If you are ok with it, then don't bother to upgrade now. Unless you have lots of spare cash and no where else to spend it on and due to some reason(s), you just need to spend it away, then maybe yes.

Not the case with Nehalem to Sandy Bridge.

I would say about a 40% jump to Sandy Bridge then about 10% or so to Haswell.

Have you overclocked that 920? At stock they're pretty damn slow by todays standards but if you give them a few Hertz to work with they'll achieve some pretty decent speeds.
