Please note I WAS using fan controlled software when the fan stopped working. "Notebook Fan Controller" NEVER above %75 fan speed.

---------------------------------------

Hello new user here, I'm having a fan problem with my Asus X73S (k73sd mobo) I will list the specs now to get the out of the way

Win7 (stolen copy cause I'm poor)

i7 2670QM 2.10ghz/3.10TurboBoost

8gb ram

1gb nVidia geForce 610m

Not sure what BIOS version, I try not to mess around with the BIOS after bricking a Toshiba satellite..

Your average 2012 "quality laptop"..

So I got the machine free from my step dad for Xmas (2014) all it needed was a hard drive, then one day the fan died.. It is a 4 wire fan with a PWM pin, the pin out is as follows.

Red, +5V

Blue, PWM

Black, Ground

Yellow, Temp

When the fan stopped working I ordered a new 4 wire fan and I ran a rigged up 3 wire fan at %100 speed all the time until the new replacement fan arrived.

Fast forward 2 months.

New fan showed up today, plugged the fan in and started to reassemble my laptop, but Linus got in my head and said test it before you put any more screws in...

So I power the laptop on, and the fan did not spin.. :( (THANK YOU LINUS FOR GETTING IN MY DOME!)

I disconnected the red and black power wires and used the old fans plastic plug bit as a " test plug " (just the power wires, NO Temp, NO PWM) and the fan it self works but is again running at %100 speed.

Here is a really poorly drawn diagram of what I mean, the TOP wire diagram does NOT work, the BOTTOM diagram DOES work.

I think the PWM pin is fried :(

If you have a multimeter you can check and see if you get any life out of it, also a circuit tester might work. May be burned out as you suspect. See if the fan is in bios, when connected. i don't work on laptops so this is just my 2 cent, i wish you the best of luck.

Just the PWM to ground with a multimetr I would assume?

yup, should get something i would think. i know they are super picky when it comes to shorting out. i would say solder a resistor but, it's probably better for it to run at 100% than something much lower.

http://bit.ly/1Ioiz7uThis might help. Just be a little loud though. Kidding . Of course i would contact the brand or you might have assmbled it wrong, UNLESS of course it wasnt the first fan that died and was the power port for the fan that has gone bad, Grab a multimeter

That basically shows that the software that you had did a number on your fan controls. see if fully uinstalling the fan controller, resetting the BIOS, and installing a different fan controller will fix the problem.

CPU: Pentium G3258 @ 3.2GHz || GPU:(first release,used) MSI R9 270 OC || Motherboard:MSI Z97-G45 Gaming Motherboard || RAM: 8 GB G.Skill Sniper 1600 || Monitors: Vizio 22 in Ultra slim 1080p TV || Storage: Seagate barracuda 160 GB 7200RPM,(REFURB) 1TB toshiba 7200RPM || PSU: (stripped from 2013 CAD PC)Corsair CX600 build was under $420

OK so got it apart again today.. Here are some pictures, none of the capacitors are bulged.. No scorch marks from what I can see or blown resistors..

Hooked a multimeter up OHM style and got some resistance when touching positive to the PWM pin and negative to a ground on the mobo, also took some real pictures

I fear that the fan control software may have just cost me 200$ for a replacement motherboard, in witch case I will most likely just run the laptop at %100 fan speed and use the 200 towards a desktop.
