I bought this to connect 2 pcs together and to the internet. I also have a printer that needs ethernet too. Did I order the wrong item? Thanks    http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-SG108-1000Mbps-Desktop-Gigabit/dp/B00A121WN6/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1430977763&sr=8-5&keywords=ethernet+router+gigabit

Assuming you already have a modem/router to plug it into it'll be perfectly fine.

You need to have the router.

Plug the switch into the router, the connection to your router will be limited to 100mb/s but that shouldn't be an issue.

Plug both of the computers and the printer into the switch they'll have a 100mb/s connection to the router / internet and they'll still be able to communicate with each other via gigabit assuming they have gigabit network cards and gigabit cables (won't make a difference for the printer).

Like 20 bucks

I don't think you'll find a router with gigabit for $20 and if you did it'd be fairly terrible, you'd be much better using the 100mb/s in the meantime and saving for a higher quality router.

That one should work fine.

That one should also be fine although I'd avoid buying second hand networking gear personally and I've never had good experiences with D-link but that's just me.

I got the netgear one open box on ebay for like 30 bcuks. Do I just run a cat6 from the router to the switch? How would I do that?

Just plug the switch into any of the "LAN" ports via a CAT5e / CAT6 cable and once you've configured the router settings according to your ISP's instructions you'll be good to go.

That's a damn good switch. Make sure you plug your (wireless) router directly into your modem provided by your ISP, then plug the switch into one of the outputs on the router.

Is it better than the router?

I'm going to stop you right there.  (oops, didn't see that apparently your modem is also a router)

A router and switch are not particularly interchangeable. In order to get my home network figured out I had to plug the router into the modem, then the switch into the modem.

Yes. I have this

Not the best sorry

                          100Mbs Switch (Goes thought House)

Modem/router-----|

Netgear gigabit router---- Tp Link switch --- Pc and stuff

Is thus better that just the router?

There should be no performance difference. The switch acts as a way to get more ethernet ports from a network device. The setup you have right now should actually work if your modem is really a router as well.

Is there any gain for using the switch of the router and not the modem/router?
