Hey guys. We will move to our new house in the next 2 weeks and I'm sitting here figuring out what to do with the WiFi. So basically the ISP Installed the Internet on our new house and their modem combo/router thing that they provide sucks. It gets 7.08 Mbps downstairs and 9.05 Mbps upstairs and is only 2.4 ghz the modem is located upstairs and we have a 12 Mbps network plan on our ISP. I checked using a WiFi Analyzer app on my phone that the 2.4 Ghz band is used by 12 to 15 different networks and all channels are used. I was wondering If there is any way I can optimize this so I will get fast Internet both upstairs and downstairs and is it a good idea to get a 5 Ghz router If so what brand?

Thanks in advanced guys. I know there is allot of people who can help me here since they helped me before :) This is a really great community to ask problems like this and more :D

If you have 12-15 different networks on 2.4GHz a dual band 5.0 GHz router will do much better since there will be less interference. It will however lessen the range so you may want to add a repeater or another access point if your range isn't very desirable.

As for brands a lot of people recommend Asus I personally use Linksys with no problems but others not so much, due to the new software.

If I use a repeater will it give me same speeds? And will it also be 5 Ghz. Sorry for the noob question I never used one before

It depends on the repeater there are some can do 5.0Ghz but do cost more, as for speeds you will most likely see a drop since the signal is being repeated. I personally used one before and it worked but not amazing, If you can add another access point (AP) that would be ideal since you can either setup the AP as a different SSID to connect to whichever signal is stronger or have it setup so that you can roam between the two and they will  select whichever one is the best.

Replace your router or at least ensure you're on an up to date, known to be stable version of the firmware. I always opt to leave my modem as close to the line coming into the house and then use an Ethernet cable to run from that to wherever the router/switch is located.

Running ethernet to an extreme point of the home and setting up a repeater or similar will fill in the gaps. Check out the video on LTT "Pimp my WiFi"

Some good ideas in that. Good hardware, too. Very tempted to buy one, but I cannot justify the Unifi points at their price as my house is served adequately by my current router.

It is certainly 1 way of doing things, though you can spend far less money and get good coverage. Careful placement of a half decent AP will always improve the situation, if currently your main WiFi is being managed next to an external wall, at a far extreme of your home, leaving the other extreme low of signal.

Let us know what the outcome is.
